2013 HIV CAMPAIGN EDO STATE

The 7th phase of Community HIV and AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (ATM) preventive education project of Total Group in Nigeria took place between September 9 -12, 2013 in Benin, Edo State. It kicked off with the Peer Education training for Customer Attendants, Drive Way Supervisors and Mr Service at Constantial Hotel Benin City, Edo State.

In his opening remarks delivered on behalf of the Management of Total Upstream Companies in Nigeria and Total Nigeria Plc, Engr. Koleade Adegunle pointed out that Total Group as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility was giving back to the society by creating awareness on HIV and AIDS pandemic and how it can be prevented. According to them, the role of the Peer Educators are key in passing pertinent information about HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to their customers and other people in their Business host Community. The participants, who were encouraged to participate actively in the training, asked questions, justifying investment in the programme.

The 27 participants (22 males and 5 females), drawn from 13 service stations, were equipped with necessary skills and information to conduct informal sessions (one-on-one or in groups) with their Peers on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria issues.

Dealers were also trained on HIV/ AIDS prevention in order to obtain their support. This was facilitated by Nigerian Business Coalition Against AIDS (NiBUCAA), and Edo State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS (EDOSACA). Twelve (12) dealers were in attendance alongside Regional Sales Manager (RSM) at Total Nigeria Plc, Mr. D.P Akade.

PROVISION OF HIV COUNSELING AND TESTING (HCT) (SEPTEMBER 10 - 21, 2013)  

The Voluntary HIV Counseling and Testing was conducted for Eleven (11) days from September 10 - 21, 2013. Six counselors provided the services in 4 service stations: Akpakpava Road, Sapele Road, New Benin and 1st East Circular Road Stations. A total of 1,204 persons within the age range of 16 to 90 years (Male -875, female -317) were counseled and tested.

Those who tested positive were referred to USG/GON supported sites -Central Hospital, Benin and support groups of PLHIV for further management (support, care and treatment).

 

 

 

PROJECT LAUNCH  

 

The project launch was heralded by the donation of laboratory equipments to General Hospital, Ubiaja - was held on Thursday September 19, 2013 at Total Service station 1st East Circular Road, Benin City, Edo State. This donation was made by TOTAL Group in Nigeria (Upstream and Downstream companies). In attendance were Her Excellency, wife of the Deputy Governor of Edo State Mrs. Endurance Odubu, Commissioner for Health, Edo State Dr. (Mrs.) Aihanuwa Eregie, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social development, Edo State, Hajia Maimuna Momodu, and Project Manager, Edo state Agency for the Control of HIV/Aids (EDOSACA).

The high point of the event was the address by the Deputy speaker, on behalf of the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, who appreciated Total Group in Nigeria for “spending time, energy and resources in Edo State”.
